Shopping Around

Let's say I'm in the market for a new sewing machine.

I want one for piecing as well as one that works well for quilting
(because, even though I've only finished 2 complete quilts,
this is something I really want to do more of).

What should I look for (size, features, whatever)?

What do you use and what are some of the features you love about it?

I know you can go from mild to wild here and I don't even know
right now what price range I'm going to be looking in so just share
what you want and then I'll narrow it down after that!

I sew on a Bernina 440QE and I love it. I have had it for about 5 or 6 years & right now can't imagine having another machine. I have friends who have gotten fancy machines that do all & they like sewing on my machine because it is quilting specific.
Another idea is to find a shop that sells their class room machines at a discounted rate. A friend of mine got a 440QE that way for a great price.

If you actually want to quilt (the top, the batting, and the backing) the machine, you will need a walking foot and feed dogs that can be dropped.

I have a Janome 3160QDC and I LOVE it. I blogged about here
if you want to see what comes with it.

I agree with Nancy that a walking foot is so great. Other than that, I play around with the fancy stitches, but don't use them much. I do like the automatic threader, though it isn't a requirement. Same with the cutter that automatically cuts your thread when you are finished sewing.

I'm a new quilter and bought the Singer Confidence Quilter. For $299at Joann's you can't beat it. Had auto threader, walking foot, extension table and 99 built in stiches. Great bargain for me just learning.
